The new USS Little Rock is one of the Navyís newest warships. It was built in Marinette, Wisconsin and is a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) that will operate in waters close to the shore. The vessel also has a helicopter pad, a ramp for small boats and can be used by small assault forces.
The original USS Little Rock began its service as a light cruiser when World War II was coming to an end in 1945. It was officially decommissioned in 1949 and recommissioned in 1960 as a guided missile cruiser, before being taken out of service in 1976 and brought to Buffalo.
The name of the original USS Little Rock and the new vessel both pay tribute to Arkansasí state capital. In her role, the USS Little Rock will play an important role in the new fleet of warships that will carry out our nationís future maritime strategy.
We, the Commissioning Committee, are proud to announce that the USS Little Rock will be commissioned in Buffalo, New York. Our committee was
formed to assist the United States Navy during the commissioning ceremony as well as to provide a unique experience for the citizens of Buffalo,
New York and Little Rock, Arkansas, along with other interested parties.
It is interesting to note that, during the Navyís 240-year history, the commissioning of the USS Little Rock will mark the very first time that a
ship will be commissioned alongside its namesake ship. This is indeed an historic event!
The week-long celebration, culminating with the commissioning, is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2017. As the commissioning
chairman, I would encourage you to continue monitoring our website for event updates along with tickets and merchandise. You can also
explore ways to support this exciting event with a monetary gift or with the option of serving as an event sponsor.
We look forward to seeing you throughout the commissioning week. In the meantime, thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and
support. This is a national and historical event and one that reflects well on the Buffalo, New York community. It is our honor to
be hosting the event and my privilege to be acting as the event chairman.
